Computer Captains have shown that they understand computers inside in out, from software to hardware.

Do you have what it takes to become a computer captain?

Requirements


  1. Explain the difference between hardware and software and name three examples of each.
  2. Count to 1000 in binary numbers
  3. Make a list of at least six computer peripherals. Show which peripherals are used for input, and which are used for output.
  4. With an adult's help and permission, dissect (take apart) an old and broken down computer. Label each of the following parts and describe what each one does:
    1. Processor
    2. Hard Drive
    3. RAM
    4. Motherboard
    5. Power Supply
  5. Choose oneof the following important computers from history to study. You can research your choice using web sites, videos and books. Write an original essay, presentation, song, rap or poem about the computer you have chosen. Explain who invented the computer you chose, when it was invented, what it was used for, and why it is important in computer history.
    1. The Abacus
    2. Babbage's Difference Engine
    3. ENIAC
    4. PONG
    5. The Apple II
    6. The iPad
  6. Choose two operating systems to study such as Ubuntu Linux, Microsoft Windows, or the Mac OS. Try out both interfaces, and make a list of what is similar and what is different between the two operating systems. Finally, describe which operating system you would choose if you were buying a computer for yourself and why.
